Month of Awesome Women: Martha Jones (Doctor Who)
Month of Awesome Women, week one:
Hermione Granger | Tara Maclay | Gwen Cooper | Diana Barrigan | Katara | Laura Roslin | Astrid Farnsworth
---
"Women might train to be doctors, but hardly a scivvy and hardly one of your colour."
"Oh, d'you think? Bones of the hand. Carpal bones, proximal row: scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, pisiform. Distal row: trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate. Then the metacarpal bones extending in three distinct phalanges: proximal, middle, distal."
Martha Jones

Martha Jones. She saves planets. You can count on her when the world's ending. She's going to be a doctor. She has the strength to walk away when the hurt outweighs the wonder of the universe.
Oh, and every time she's on screen it's like there's an explosion of rainbows and sparkles in my heart. I don't even know. When Rose left the show I felt somewhat unready to allow another companion into my heart initially, but as soon as Smith & Jones started I was smitten. Her arc in S3 frustrates me in some ways (what do you mean she doesn't get 'proper companion status' until the end of episode 6?!) it does give her ample room to demonstrate that she is more than capable of rising to any challenge.
Kidnapping? No problem. The Doctor being an arse? Yell at him until he stops. Stuck in 1913 and subjected to constant racial abuse? Snark your way through it and dream of a better tomorrow. World being slowly turned to ash, overrun by an evil overlord and his terrifying minions, all allies incapacitated and no hope? Just walk around the world, get the entirety of humanity on your side and then laugh in the Master's face, no big deal.
Then she gets whisked through the ranks of UNIT, introduces Torchwood to this notion of 'competence', has the Doctor at her beck and call, becomes BFFs with Donna, has multiple staggeringly gorgeous and heroic men wanting to marry her, is stupidly magnificent even in alternate dystopian universes, hugs Rose (GUYS, THAT MARTHA AND ROSE HUG, I'LL NEVER BE OVER IT), is prepared to blow up the entire planet if it'll stop the Daleks masterplan, and goes around being a badass and saving the universe forever.
SHE'S KIND OF AMAZING, IS WHAT I'M SAYING.

Martha, seeing the world. (Or universe, rather.)

I think she has the best arc of all the New Who companions (leaving aside the special case of Jack). And it's all the better and more powerful because the Doctor accepts her so begrudgingly and conditionally at first.
