Merlin 3x02

Oh man, I have very mixed feelings about that one.

Of the good:

+ Morgana being badass! And having some feelings! And the writers vaguely acknowledging her motivations!
+ Epic battle was epic, how is this only the second episode?
+ Gwen got some lines!
+ In general I loved the scene between Merlin and Morgana down in the crypt - that tragic sense that maybe if things had been different, they could still have been friends. More on that below, though.
+ Arthur being all kingly, always good to see.
+ In general I thought that it was a tense and well-structured episode. Colour me surprised!

Of the bad:

+ And yet, I felt myself ending the episode feeling somewhat despondent.
+ For one, I am not sure I can bear Morgana being sekritly evil in Camelot for the foreseeable future, especially if she keeps having those awkward scenes with Gwen. Although, given that Gwen definitely knows something's up, maybe the show might deal with their relationship? Maaaybe? I live in hope.
+ Here is a thing that I wish. I WISH that Gaius and Merlin could acknowledge (or that the show could acknowledge for them somehow) that the REASON Morgana is so bitter and full of hate and set against everyone in the world is at least in part THEIR FAULT. If either of them had been honest with her, things could have turned out so differently. ARGH.
+ The Merlin/Arthur dynamic this season so far is really not working for me. It's too slapstick and also too cruel. You can have humour without making out like Arthur barely gives a crap about Merlin, writers, really! Because we know that he does.

Of the future:

+ So I'm definitely on board with the theory that Uther is Morgana's biological father, now.
+ Next week looks really cringeworthy. :/ Although, Richard Wilson getting a chance to do comedy is definitely of the good!
+ Moar Morgause, pls. Also moar Gwen besides being emotional support for Arthur (though I did like that scene tonight). And I hope that's not the last we see of Cendred!

In conclusion: I enjoyed the episode but am less squeeful about tuning in next time as I was last week. But, knowing this stupid, ridiculous yet somehow compelling show, I'll get sucked back in soon.

I only ever realise that Merlin has aired because of you.

I'm really hating Giaus now. When he went to follow Morgana I said "and what's he gonna do? Sanctimony her to death?"

You basically summed up my thoughts on the entire thing. I really wish the show would treat these issues seriously, instead of cutting moments short so Merlin and Arthur can have a slapsticky, not-at-all-funny moment. Arthur strikes me as nothing but a bully these days, and Merlin's little better.

What I wanted to see was Merlin admit to Morgana about his magic, and how much he really does understand, in an honest effort to communicate. But it's obvious to me he doesn't really care.

Oh well. Gwen and Morgana and Morgause were gorgeous, and even though I absolutely hate stand-alone comedy episodes on this show, I'll keep watching.

i am starting to think maybe you are right about uther being morgana's father... which throws early series 1 into a squicky arthur/morgana light (much like the legends)

next ep... yeah, i cringed

Yes, yes and yes.

I don't believe the show will ever get complex enough to acknowledge Merlin's and Gaius' failures and wrongdoing.

YES. It's so fucking typical. Merlin is portrayed as all good and pure hearted because he's willing to uphold a corrupt system, while Morgana's storyline suggests that trying to work against a corrupt system can only lead to two-dimensional evil. There's absolutely now acknowledgement that Merlin and Gaius's willingness to uphold that system is a fault here.
