Star Trek Rewatch -- Charlie X
(Delayed owing to technical difficulties, my apologies!)

The Enterprise takes seventeen-year-old Charles Evans aboard for transport after he spent fourteen years alone on a deserted planet, but he's unable to interact with his fellow Humans. [Memory Alpha]

The Enterprise meets with the Antares, a small survey ship with an unusual cargo they want to pass over - a teenage boy, Charlie Evans. He's the sole survivor of a ship that crashed into the planet Thasus, and has lived alone for the past fourteen years.
In the transporter room, the two men from the Antares sing Charlie's praises, but something's clearly off. Kirk welcomes Charlie aboard and the men are hastily on their way.

Yeoman Rand comes to escort Charlie to his quarters, and Charlie is instantly taken with her, asking in tones of wonderment whether she's a girl, a fact that Kirk in amusement confirms.

Charlie does a physical with McCoy, who asks him questions about how he managed to survive alone for so long and confirms that Charlie is in perfect health.

Charlie wanders around the ship, observing crew behaviour and trying to replicate it. Unfortunately, he witnesses one crewman tapping another in a friendly farewell gesture and repeats this by hitting Rand on the ass, which doesn't go down too well.

She tells him he's going to have to get Kirk to explain gender relations to him, which Charlie promises to do. She also tells him that she can meet him in one of the recreation rooms later to spend some time with him.

Later in the recreation room, and Spock is treating everybody to music played on his Vulcan lute.

Uhura and Rand are both quite taken with this, and Uhura starts to sing along.

This leads into a full blown performance, with Uhura dancing around the room and crooning at Spock's shoulder. It's pretty much the best scene ever, and here are the lyrics to the song she sings.

Rand is watching in delight despite Charlie's attempts to get her attention, so he causes Uhura to lose her voice.

He then starts to impress Rand with miraculous card tricks.

Back on the bridge and Uhura receives a faint message from the Antares with what sounds like a warning. It's cut off, and Charlie remarks that the ship wasn't well-made in any case. Shortly after that, Spock confirms that it's been destroyed.

Charlie starts to get more ill-tempered, and he starts doing more strange things.

Upon losing a game of chess with Spock, he leaves several pieces mangled apparently through the power of his mind.

Rand tries to find Charlie someone nearer his own age for him to hang out with, but he's not having any of it, insisting upon spending time alone with Rand instead.

Realising he's developed a crush on her, Rand talks to Kirk, concerned about having to hurt him.

Kirk attempts to talk to him about adolescence and women, and hilarity ensues.

Kirk takes Charlie down to the gym so they can spar and be manly together.

Kirk is shirtless for no reason. (Is someone keeping tabs on this? *g*)
However, after being laughed at by another man in the gym, Charlie lashes out and makes the guy disappear.

After a tussle, he's escorted away by security.

Kirk, Spock and McCoy try and work out what on earth they can do with him, deciding that they can no longer take him to his original destination, where he'll be a danger to the people living there.

Charlie starts messing with systems on the ship, taking control of them or causing them to short-circuit.

He also gets Spock reciting poetry.

He turns up unannounced at Rand's quarters in an attempt to woo her, but she's not having any of it. After an argument, he ends up making her disappear too.

Charlie takes over the bridge, where the crew attempt to overload his ability by activating as many systems as they can.

Even though he doesn't seem able or willing to kill Kirk, he does incapacitate him, and it seems there's no stopping him until Rand suddenly rematerialises on the bridge.

An entity appears on the viewscreen - it's the semi-mythic Thasians. It's revealed that they looked after Charlie when the ship crashed, and gave him his powers so that he would be able to survive. They reverse as much of the damage done as they can and take Charlie away with them, recognising that he cannot live among his own kind.

The Thasians depart with Charlie, leaving the ship in peace.

Thoughts? For me, this kind of had too many shades of Where No Man Has Gone Before to get really engrossed in the plot, but I loved seeing Rand getting more of a role, albeit not exactly a ground-breaking one, and that whole scene with Uhura and Spock and the lute was just fabulous. (Also, I may be shipping Uhura/Rand a little bit now, they were adorable!)

no subject
But you're right: this was very "Where No Man Has Gone Before", with the Rand abuse from "The Enemy Within" thrown in. I'm hoping they start moving into something a little different.
My watch-along post.
